We planted a very small garden this year on the homestead and it did not turn out well. This was a test to see if soil on our homestead was good and well we found it was not. So will amend soil and try again next spring, you can take a soil sample to you conservation office in the county your homestead is in and have it tested to see what has to be added. I will be adding some lime and a lot of compost to our homestead soil. We have mostly sand where we are so i will have to add some clay to the soil too. I will till it in and let it sit for a winter and till and plant next spring. If you can find a tree company that heeds a place to dump wood chips, I would let them dump on your homestead because they will break down and make great soil, it might take a liitle while but it will be worth it.I will be looking foward to canning and freezing from the garden of our homestead next year. I will also plant at a later date my fruit trees and other things like blackberries and others on the homestead when we know where all if the houses on the homestead are going to be. My homestead garden will be about 50 ft wide and 50 ft long for next spring. The garden will have to wait till we can get a well in on our homestead because it will take to much water when you have to haul it in 275 gallons at a time. But slowly, while we wait on the well, I will admend the soil and get it ready. When you plant your garden remember to plant what you will eat, don`t plant beans and peas if you don`t eat them. Plan your garden out every year and rotate your crops so the land get to put the nutrients back in it lost the previous year.
